For Hosts

As a Host, you should ensure you have adequate insurance to cover your property and any liability that may arise from storing third-party vehicles and equipment on your premises. Consider the following:

  • Does your public liability insurance cover visitors and their property on your site?
  • Does your property insurance cover your land, structures, and improvements used for storage?
  • Check your existing policy to confirm commercial storage activities are covered
  • Notify your insurer that you are earning income from vehicle or equipment storage
  • Ask your insurance broker whether umbrella or excess liability coverage is appropriate for your situation

For Storers (Vehicle Owners)

As a Storer, you should maintain insurance on your vehicle or equipment even while it is in storage. Recommendations include:

  • Check whether your comprehensive vehicle insurance covers theft, fire, storm, and vandalism while stored at a third-party location
  • Confirm with your insurer that your policy covers vehicles while stored at a private address
  • For unregistered equipment, ask your insurer about inland transit or equipment insurance options
  • Document the condition of your vehicle before and after storage (photos recommended)
  • Keep a copy of your insurance policy details accessible
